Where in the body is sperm produced?

Sperm production occurs in the seminiferous tubules, which are located within the testes. The seminiferous tubules are specialized structures where spermatogenesis takes place. This process involves the transformation of spermatogonia into mature sperm cells through several stages, including mitotic divisions and meiosis. The fertile environment provided by the Sertoli cells, which nourish and support developing sperm cells, is critical for proper sperm development within the seminiferous tubules.

While the testes serve as the overall site for sperm production and are essential for housing the seminiferous tubules, the actual maturation and formation of sperm occur specifically within these tubules. Other structures, such as the epididymis and the vas deferens, are involved in storing and transporting sperm but do not play a role in their production.
